Buyers Guide: Holiday Gift List, Part II

Last minute holiday shopping for the gear lover on your list? Do they seem to have everything? Are you looking for something simple, cost effective or just something you know they’ll use?

Below is my quick and dirty list of non-gear items for any gear lover. Fast items you can get online, at just about any outdoor retailer or even just household items from Amazon!

  1. Garment washing bags like these from Amazon. I use these every week. Washing socks, hats, Buffs, gloves….you name it.
  2. Wax. Perfect for sticky zippers on coats, tents, bags….if it zips-it sticks.
  3. Repair tape. Tenacious tape in the roll or a pack of patches that work on all kinds of fabric. If they own gear, at some point they need to patch gear. Way easier to do if they have it on hand! Bonus points for something fun like this!
  4. Watch screen protectors! I did not know these were a thing until I bought my Garmin Fénix and realized I was going to need something. I found a 3 pack on Amazon for both mine and Brandon’s watches just by searching the model!
  5. Wine*! But make it outdoorsy! I love that Revelshine sells wine in aluminum bottles!!! No pouring into a plastic flask to enjoy a nice red with your backcountry dinner! You can find them online or at Target in California or Colorado.
  6. Whisky*-again, make it outdoorsy. Think 14er…..think non-breakable. But you need to choose. Tincup sells whisky in an aluminum bottle as well, or you can spring for a Fourteener Bourbon if you really want to make someone happy!
  7. A Pass! Take your pick….ski pass, park pass, climbing pass, Film Fest tickets….Banff still has screenings around the country, Reel Rocks is another to look for….the ultimate last second gift.
  8. Support equipment! Think batteries, SD cards, micro SD cards….do they have items that have costs to maintain or use? Buy the items that goes with it! Maybe a case for their binoculars, or a shoulder strap holder for their DSL camera!
  9. Food! Maybe some chews like our favorite from Honey Stinger or a new lightweight meal to try! You can’t go wrong with a simple classic like chicken and rice from Mountain House.
  10. Donate on their behalf! This is another quick and last minute idea. Are they a loyal listener to a Podcast like The Sharp End? Make them a Patreon member and let them reap the benefits of bonus content! Think of their favorite wilderness area or conservancy like Save The Boundary Waters or a project they want to see happen like Rails to Trails! Most often donations send a Thank You gift. Put down your loved one’s name and DONE!

*alcohol doesn’t ship to all areas.
